Mojo Workin' II

The second of a new Blues Series, I think most of you missed the first one "Muddy Waters" (Mojo Workin' I)
It's posted before the Tools of the Trade post.
This is 114cmx76cm.
Displayed here in a stock frame.
Finished this one last week.
I've just completed another standard sheet of Sonny Boy Williamson which I'll post shortly.

Great stuff. Including the blues. You need to snap the photos before they're framed and in good lighting so we can see more! Pleased to see this is a larger file image too, as that helps us see it better. Looking forward to Sonny Boy.

You can tell it's Wille D, even in that fractured style. The palette and all of the specks and sparkles bring the stage to life..and of course the upright is one of the best instruments of all for an artist. Like how the pic ends on the right side, with that strip. The pinks are the magic color in this one for me. And that hand!!!!!! That's the superlative for me, it's just fantastic Dake.

Thanks Clive, Welcome to my blog, it's great to see you.
Hey Nick. the hand was as almost the end of this painting. Typical of you to like it. The strip on the right is supposed to he under the mat, as I said this is a "stock" frame just to give me an idea of how it will look framed.
This frame had the Brides painting in it. Once again your unique sense of design focuses on the anomalies
Must do more of that.
This one was bloody struggle, problems with the palette. Converting a b&w YouTube clip into a colour production I found harder than I thought. Still trialling this method.
All of these images came from the one clip. Muddy Waters "Got my Mojo Workin'" look it up!

Hi David,
...a very powerful yet subdued piece in a compositional sense and a colour sense. Wow!!

For a music subject, I feel you have 'tuned in' well to the spirit of the music through colour, forms, light and shade. Amongst the many facets of this painting I really like are the lines of the instrument's strings being 'broken' here or there ... that's something that I too played around with in some watercolours I did of Tommy Emmanuel back in '90 (i.e. TE's guitar's strings). I like the subtle warm-cool variegations in your painting and the spatial divisions identified not only by 'edges' but through colour/tone identity. Taken together, the whole work is intrinsically musical to me, especially chromatically. I can see, almost 'hear', the chord progressions and the bass lines... a winner.

fantastic work Dake! i love the posterized effect on the dark skin. that is what drew my eye in first.

it also got me curious about R.L. Burnside. he is the blues-master on my ipod at the moment. looked him up and found his pic. he would make a great subject also. see http://www.moonstruckrecords.com/img/artist/rl_burnside_full.jpg

keep it up man!

Wayne, your comments humble me.
Thanks so much for your encouragement, support and wonderful observations on life.
Willie Dixon deserves the largest format of the series, he left a legacy second to none in modern musical history, Rock and Roll for example.
He wrote some gigantic songs.

Hey Joel, thanks cobber. Perhaps you can swing by Perth around Jan 24 for the show.

The horizontal frame goes a long way to support the visual story being told here. A man and his bass. Again your use of edges and white space creates a nice groove for the eye to hang out in. Not only a tribute to the great blues men of past and present, but a tribute to your ability to get the right color notes down and arranged on the paper in a fearless flurry.
