AlleyArtCarpet

Sitting back chilling here to Killing Joke's "Pandemonium" album, with a nice Scotch, looking through some photos. Found this one of an alley off an alley in Perth.
I like the design from this perspective.
Thought it would make a nice rug.
So I cunningly weaved it on two old hessian bags with hand coloured string spun from virgin yak pubes using a found BBQ skewer.
Well the idea ran through my head but photoshop seemed quicker.
Sadly the local fascist city council has since erased this design from the turquoise wall.
This fits with the alley paintings
from last year.

I thought that was a painting at first, an intersection of Navajo blankets and urbanfitti. I was even believing the story, right up to the found skewer. (I know you'd buy one). From what I've seen, the backways, byways, and sidewalks of Perth should be protected, not unlike the hallowed Aboriginal burial grounds.
The new profile pic - and I hate to use this word - is awesome!

Hi Nick, Melbourne has the most respected and longstanding street-art culture in Australia.
The mentality in Perth is to keep it clean, bare and as boring as possible. There's a bill before the WA House of Reps to ban kids under 16 from buying paint and "thick markers". Heheh, make the little bastards think outside the square when it comes to materials.
Anyway thanks for taking the time pal! You'd be chasing butterflies around your belly for a while yet I expect, with the Seneffe show looming. I'm sure it'll go very well for you.

Patricia, thanks for coming by again.
Hey you know a good drop is a marvelous thing!

Hey david ... I want that for the backdrop for my studio.. and by the way would be nice to have a studio that hasn't taken over my entire apartment. Kind of like certain folks that invade a neighborhood and bring down the property value. Good thing my wife doesn't mind sitting next to watercolor paper supports. But enough of my petty whining! Glad to see a new post here and I suspect you'll be letting some new works hit the light of day. Would like to get the gang together and do a month's worth of painting mayhem and partake in much ribald roistering. Also you wear the purple with just the right about of moxy… a good fit.

Hi David,
The image together with your commentary weaves a clever sardonic double-take on art, not just in WA but also more broadly, globally. For example, the recursive ideas of 'paintings of paintings', 'photos of paintings', 'prints of paintings or of photographs', 'creatively-edited images or of digital image composition de novo in Photoshop or other image-editing software' .. and so the list goes on.

Like Nick, I was believing the story you were spinning, ...and then, like PG, when it came to Yuck's pyuoobz and "found BBQ skewer" .. I ran into the council wall because I wasn't watching the concrete!

Fortunately, here in Canberra (believed by many to be one of the most over-beaurocratised cities in Oz), the local gov't actually have quite a lot of public walls set aside where graffiti artists are allowed to show their work. Many are not in prominent places but at least it's a start..
cheers Wayne
PS btw I really like that pic/image too!

Hi David,
I think what I was trying to say in my earlier comment (in too many words!) was that this "AlleyArtCarpet" (and many other forms of art) create a virtual-connection from one picture to another (even when you consider a 'retinal imprint' from a landscape scene as a 'generic image', ...so that basically, now, our whole notion of 'visual art' needs to be augmented, more accommodating, much broader, as we move forward into the 21st century with all the new communication media it offers (even including these blogs!!).
Hopefully this may clarify what I was trying to say earlier..
cheers again, Wayne

Thanks Wayne, Of course I was thinking just of the aesthetics as usual. This little corner of the city would have been seen by very few, tucked away from the thousands passing nearby every day.
A quiet utterance or two on a brick wall has an echo.
A agree with Nick as to the value bestowed on informal art whether it be done tomorrow or a thousand years ago. It's just life.

Ha, ha! David! You almost had me..but not quite!!
You are right about Melbourne! The graffiti art in some of the lanes and alley ways off the main streets is stunningly beautiful....and I never thought I would say that about graffiti!!

Excellent wall art David. I think in some parts of the world they reward their street artists with a good caning - if they get their hands on 'em. Some of the work one finds in the public space is truly spellbinding like this one and I'm pleased to see it. Here in the States public art programs have been bankrupted (silenced) - hope the situation is better for artists in Australia. While some are out gathering spray paint and wide markers I'll be checking out the skewer-filled fare.

As something tell me
Go on push that door
Don't stand on the door way...
My expectation
Are met...

Thank you for Sharing
May I put my eyelid so gently on your cheek.

hey. Dake. i thought i had commented on this one before. i certainly meant to. it probably was something i dreamed eh?

this piece is full of hidden goodies. i LOVE the khaki/green line that runs haphazardly up in up in the back corner. i love the shapes and color of the ground space. but it is the cool perspective and collections of shapes that really make this one jump out at me.

nicely done. maybe with a few more years under my belt i could make more intelligent comments. for now you just get what i can give!!!

:)
